40 Years of Cobra Kit Cars
Fiberglass and aluminum copies of the classic Shelby Cobra of the 1960s has almost singlehandedly fueled the Kit Car craze. With kits starting as cheap as $10,000 your average gearhead can create their own dream car.
While genuine Shelby Cobras go for hundreds of thousands of dollars (and up), these high-tech replicas can also reach high prices when they are executed to the level of precision that some manufacturers offer. Be prepared to see everything from small-block 289s to the fire-breathing 427 side-oiler as powertrains to these cars. These definitely are not the cheap kit cars of yesteryear.
Note that not all Cobra kit cars are licensed by Carroll Shelby. Superformance and Unique Motorsports currently hold the legal right to produce copies of the original Shelby Cobra. This is not a big issue for you as a buyer, it just limits the ability for the manufacturers to call their cars Shelby Cobras.
